Agenda

By integrating a localized beverage culture into Seongsu-dong’s distinct pedestrian dynamic—characterized by exploring diverse pop-up stores and flagship shops—this project aims to establish a cultural anchor that transcends conventional commercial streets, harmonizing local identity with multifaceted experiential spaces.

The project expands upon the typical coffee-centric urban routine to foster a novel lifestyle mediated by “beer embodying Seongsu-dong.” Rather than remaining passive consumers of space, visitors are encouraged to actively engage in a journey—from discovering personal tastes to interacting with the architecture and surrounding cityscape.

Ultimately, by bridging Seongsu-dong’s industrial sense of place with its youthful, vibrant energy, this proposal seeks to enrich visitor experiences while fortifying the neighborhood’s authentic identity and urban vitality.

Concept

Seongsu-dong has evolved into a unique streetscape where retro charm and modern sensibilities coexist, shaped by trendy pop-up stores and flagship shops overlaid on its historical industrial fabric. Wandering through Seongsu as if navigating a vast, open-air outlet, visitors engage with and consume the distinctive allure of its spatial experiences.

This project integrates the medium of “beer reflecting Seongsu’s identity” into this fluid pedestrian experience. Replacing ubiquitous coffee cups with locally crafted beer, it proposes a novel urban lifestyle centered on exploring the neighborhood with a glass in hand.

Site

Just as many structures in Seongsu have been revitalized by retaining the traces of former factories, this project adopts a design strategy of stacking a new mass atop the preserved substructure of an existing factory. By maintaining the temporal quality of the existing structural frame while layering a volumetric mass above, the design organically delineates the lower-level zone of “exploration and tasting” from the upper-level zone of “experience and expansion.”

The essence of Seongsu-dong lies in pedestrian movement horizontally expanding along its alleyways. This project draws the multi-layered exploration of horizontal streets into the interior, reinterpreting it as a “Vertical Promenade.” Holding a beer in hand, visitors move beyond single-level commercial browsing, circulating three-dimensionally through the building’s voids and masses to engage in a sequential spatial experience as if strolling through the city.

Program

Lower Zone (1F–4F | Tasting & Taste Discovery)

Preserving the framework of the former factory, the lower levels are designed as a taphouse where visitors experience a diverse selection of craft beers within a retro ambiance. Guided by a three-dimensionally linked circulation path along the L-shaped mass, visitors naturally sample various beers to discover their personal preferences. On the 4th floor, a large-scale bottle shop serves as the culmination of this exploration—allowing visitors to purchase and take away beer while acting as a pivotal transition point leading to the upper levels.

Upper Zone (5F–Rooftop | Sensory Media & Flexible Pairing)

After purchasing beer on the 4th floor, visitors flow into the F&B and media spaces above. The F&B lobby, defined by a dramatic double-height vertical opening, becomes a central hub for social interaction and beer-and-food pairing culture.

Arranged three-dimensionally across the 7th and 8th floors, four “Media Boxes” offer adaptable spatial atmospheres—ranging from virtual beaches to cozy sofa lounges. Holding their drinks, visitors move seamlessly between the indoor Media Boxes and the expansive rooftop garden, engaging with the cityscape of Seongsu-dong in a rich, multi-dimensional experience.
